Day 1 E3 2014: Nintendo Direct Digital Event

flag 1 E3 2014: All the latest from gamings biggest show

What will we see from this year’s E3?

It’s finally the first day of the Expo! We had a long, tiring day running from conference to conference but today was Nintendo’s day to shine.

But did it? The Nintendo Direct Digital Event was pretty dang short and didn’t give us as much as wanted. Though a lot of games were announced, like an open world Zelda title for the Wii U.

We also saw the announcement of the previously leakedMario Maker where you can create your own Mario courses. Thanks said leak, there will probably be a demo of this on the show floor.

Following in the footsteps of Disney’s Skylanders, Nintendo officially announced Amiibo, little figurines players can place on their systems to import characters into games.

Hello, Nintendo

Other big titles include Xenoblade Chronicles X, Super Smash Bros., Bayonetta 2 and more.

Read all about the games coming to Nintendo right here!

We’re hitting the Expo floor soon so keep your eyes peeled for more news! It’s going to be another long day …

Face off!

Press conferences and news

E3 is off with a bang! Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft and Sony are all holding Day 1 press conferences, and we’re gathering all the news you need to know below.

Plus, there was a little something on the Steam Machine front from Alienware.

Keep it locked on this page for more from video gaming’s biggest show as we’ll have plenty more – including news from Nintendo – to share as the week goes on.

In the meantime, here’s what we wanted to see before all the press conferences. As the show wraps up, we’ll also let you know our favorite parts of this year’s E3.

Microsoft at E3

It was games, games and more games for Microsoft’s at E3. The emphasis was of course on the company’s Xbox Oneconsole, and many titles were teased for this year and next.

The company gave word of The Master Chief Collection, a package of Halo 1 – 4 that will eventually include access to the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta. The Collection comes out November 11 for $59.99 (about £35, AU$64). The Halo 5 beta is out in December, and as an extra bonus The Master Chief Collection includes Halo: Nightfall. The original series from Ridley Scott and Sergio Mimica-Gezzen will provide an origin story for a crucial Halo 5 character.

A limited beta release is coming in December

Also revealed by Microsoft was a new Tomb Raider called Rise of the Tomb Raider. The new title, out in 2015, gives a look at how Lara Croft became the bad ass we know her as today.

As for the other major titles, Call of Duty fans can grab the new Advanced Warfare on November 4. Forza Horizon 2 will be out September 30 followed nearly a month later by Insomniac’s Sunset Overdrive, due out October 28.

Spine-tingling CoD excitement

Thanks to Ubisoft, we learned Assassin’s Creed Unity is due the same dayas well.

Rise, Lara. Rise

Other games include October 21′s Disney Fantasia, a new digital-only Dance Central game and a (take a deep breath) new DLC expansion for Dead Rising 3: Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX Plus Alpha. It’s not really a game per say, but Capcom hopes it serves to celebrate its “31st fanniversary.”

A Fable Legends multiplayer beta is due this fall and we got a good look at Dragon Age: Inquisition.

All the Xbox One games coming this year can be found right now

There was plenty of time devoted to Xbox One games releasing in 2015 besides Rise of the Tomb Raider, including a new Crackdown and a dragon-slaying adventure called Scalebound.

A shot of Sunset Overdrive

Keep your head up for The Witcher 3: Wilde Hunt, a new title in the Phantom Dust series and Ubisoft’s Division next year, too.

Microsoft showed a quick succession of new indie games, including Aztez, Knight Squad, Plague Inc Evolved, White Night, Earthlock: Festival of Magic, Cuphead, Hyper Light Drifter, Lifeless Planet, Slash Dash, Fru, Lover in a Dangerous Spacetime, Mighty No. 9, Grave, Threes, FenixRage, Woolfe, #IDARE, Hellraid and Below.

EA naturally focused on games for all platforms – Xbox One, PS4 and PC – during its EA presser, and some major titles got some major news during the proceedings.

Battlefield Hardline was given its due, but the most exciting thing about the new title was that it’s opening up in betaon PS4 and PC. However, it’s a first come, first served deal and only running for a limited time.

(Try to) join the fun

Also on EA’s docket was a tease. Well, actually, two teases that provided few details but plenty of buzz.

A new Mass Effect is on the way, maker BioWare confirmed, however beyond the fact that it’s not part of the franchise trilogy, there’s little to go on.

How Faith came to be

New looks were given to Mirror’s Edge 2, though more attention was paid to how DICE built the world around Faith (and Faith herself) instead of details like plot, settings and release date. We do know it will be an origin story of sorts. Oh, and she’s got way better parkour moves this time around.Ubisoft at E3

Perhaps the strangest press conference of the day, Ubisoft didn’t disappoint in showing its next-gen games. It did have the Day 1′s only on-stage dance-off to showcase the new mobile Just Dance Now, for better or for worse.

ubisoft dance off 12 E3 2014: All the latest from gamings biggest show

See what we mean

Things started out promising enough with a trailer for Far Cry 4 (out November 18) and Archer’s Aisha Tyler before taking a turn with Just Dance 2015, Just Dance Now and a fitness game called Shape Up.

We did learn Assassin’s Creed Unity will release October 18 on the Xbox One and PS4. What’s more, here’s a gameplay trailer to whet your whistle and know that four-layer co-op has been confirmed:

The proceedings did end on a high-note though as Ubisoft confirmed Rainbow Six Siege, – a five-on-five first-person shooter. Early gameplay footage of Siege pitted two teams of five – one set terrorists, the other SWAT – against one another in the attempt to rescue/hold a hostage in a small, presumably suburban, home.

The first Rainbow in six years

Rainbow Six Siege will be released sometime in 2015 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.Meet ‘Alpha,’ Alienware’s Steam Machine

It was quiet on the Steam Machine front on Day 1 except for one vendor – Alienware.

The firm revealed the name of its Steam Box to be Alpha and said it would release in time for the 2014 holiday season. The plan is to have it ship with an Xbox 360 controller since the Steam OS and Steam Controller aredelayeduntil next year. However, Alpha will be compatible with other gamepads, Alienware told TechRadar.

The Alpha dog of Steam Machines?

The console’s price starts at $549 (about £327, AU$588) and like Valve had promised, its parts will be swappable.Sony at E3

Sony. Oh, Sony. How confident you were, and rightly so. Not only did the makers of the PS4 announce new titles, it also came out with, surprise: new hardware.

First up, we expected Microsoft to unveil a white Xbox One, but Sony instead announced its own white PS4 console. The bleached console will be available bundled with the game Destiny and a 30-day subscription to PlayStation Plus.

The PS Vita TV system has been available in Japan for awhile now but Sony has rebranded the hardware asPlayStation TV and is bringing it to North American and European shores in the fall. The PlayStation TV will sell for $99 (about £58, AU$105) on its own and $139 (about £82, AU$148) as part of a bundle that includes a DualShock 3 controller, an HDMI cable, an 8GB memory card and your very own copy of the Lego Movie video game.

Major game announcements ranged from a surprising, brand new Little Big Planet 3 to the teased-before, and the highly anticipated Uncharted 4 – where we finally got … a slightly longer trailer.

a thiefs end 15 E3 2014: All the latest from gamings biggest show

No, don’t say goodbye, Drake and Sully…

Bloodborn, or the formerly leaked Project Beast, was also teased and got the internet-verse in a happy tizzy thanks to all the love for Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls developer and creator, both of which are behind the new title. Bloodborn is scheduled for a 2015 release.

Equally crowd pleasing, was another surprising announcement: a remaster and re-release of the classic adventure game Grim Fandango.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sony also told us we can travel to GTA V’s Los Santos on the PS4 this fall with Rockstar revealing that the Xbox One and PCs will also get a share of the popular game.

Finally, the PlayStation Now beta opens up for PS4 beginning on July 31 in the US and Canada.

E3 2014: Sony, Microsft, Ubisoft and EA

Update: There’s only a few days left but that hasn’t stopped the rumors. On the second page you’ll find a bit on Nintendo and a few more games as well. We’ve also added the official Battlefield Hardline trailer, if you’re into that (because why not?). As always, keep checking back for more news.

E3 2013 was the most competitive and downright crazy shows we’ve been to in the recent history of gaming. The Xbox One went head-to-head with thePS4 and began a new generation of console gaming.

But that doesn’t mean it was all great. After all, it’s been a whole year and there still aren’t a lot of games on the roster. That’s why we figure at this year’s June 10-12 Los Angeles event, big games are coming out to play.

Though that’s not all we’re expecting to see – virtual reality was the star ofGDC 2014 and there likely will be a ton more information from Sony, Oculus and other companies – if they’re smart and get in on the growing VR revolution.

We’re also hoping to see more of the Valve Steam Machines in action and perhaps hear an announcement from Nintendo to see just what the heck the über private company’s been up to.

The official E3 2014 floor plans have been released and it looks like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are lumped together in the West Hall with the other big names like Ubisoft and EA in South Hall.

Check out a more detailed list of what we want to see at E3 2014 below, and as we continue to update the page for more information leading up to our coverage of the show floor.Sony sets sights on VR

OK so it looks like Sony has something big planned for its PlayStation conference – what else could explain why its live-streaming the event to 40 movie theaters in the US?

Could it be the new info on Project Beast that’s popped up? Or maybeUncharted 4? But are these titles popcorn-worthy? After Beast leaked, it’s been noted that the game is first in a series of brand new announcements so there could be something even bigger in the works. Only a few more weeks until the Expo to find out.

Other than that, Sony seems to be on a roll lately. With the success of thePlayStation 4 and the announcement of its virtual reality endeavors,Project Morpheus , all we need is a big game for the company to be unstoppable.

Speaking of Morpheus, we’re expecting to hear more about the headset during Sony’s June 9 Press Conference. We were lucky enough to test out the gear ourselves, not once but twice and were duly impressed both times.

Along the way, we found out that Sony’s headset will probably change quite a bit before it becomes available to buy. Plus that light bar isn’t just to be a flashy feature – Project Morpheus was one of the main reasons it was put on there.

This headset looks so promising, we might even see an announcement for aMorpheus-specific game at E3.

We’ll also probably hear more about PlayStation Now, Sony’s Netflix-esque gaming service. With the PS Now beta out since the beginning of the year for the PS3 and the PS4 beta just announced, and a release expected for mid-2014, it seems like it’ll fall perfectly in line with June’s Expo.

News of a PS4 Slim being announced at E3 has recently circulated, but probably isn’t going to happen. If anything, there’ll just be hardware updates coming soon.Microsoft says ‘Game on’

It’s been a more tumultuous year for Microsoft and the Xbox One (see: the PS4′s 7 million units sold to the Xbox One’s 5 million shipped) but it’s not like the console or company are losing fans anytime soon. A freshly revealedKinect-less Xbox is being released on June 9 for £350 ($399), which matches the PS4′s own camera-less price point – may just ramp up sales.

But so far, it’s mostly thanks to the Xbox One-friendly Titanfall that the next-gen console has remained in the ring. Ryse: Son of Rome also proved popular at a time when the PS4 didn’t have any big titles. Rumor has it that we’ll be seeing a sequel announced during the June 9 Microsoft conference. But the biggest announcement that has come from the Redmond-based publisher is surely Halo 5: Guardians – which, we’re bound to learn even more about when Microsoft hits the stage Monday morning.

Major Nelson has noted on his blog that the conference will be called Xbox: Game On, so it’s safe to say there will be at least one or two (hopefully more) titles announced.

But games aside (don’t worry, it’s a brief aside) we’ll probably learn more about Microsoft’s new entertainment model. Specifically, with the consoles turning into a one-box type of entertainment machine with music and TV, we may get previews of Xbox’s new, original shows including the Steven Spielberg-produced Halo show.

Check out more Sony and Microsoft rumors about E3 right here!

Year of Ubisoft?

French multi-national video game developer and publisher Ubisoft seems ready to show off more next-gen titles during E3.

Currently, the company has been quite busy with hit after hit thanks to Assassin’s Creed and likely, the upcoming Watch Dogs game (despite someWatch Dogs controversy stirred in). You also can’t deny that Tom Clancy’s The Division looks pretty dang cool ever since it was announced at last year’s E3. Though it’s been recently delayed until 2015, we’re still going to see snippets of the game.

Is Watch Dogs really that next-gen?

In fact, Ubisoft noted in a blog just what it plans on touting during the show. Along with Watch Dogs and The Division, we’ll see French Revolution-set Assassin’s Creed Unity, Far Cry 4 in the Himalayas and a few more games.

What Ubi isn’t bringing to the table are games available on the Nintendo platform. According to Slashgear, the company will not feature any Wii U or3DS titles during the show.Whatchu got, EA?

Forget the trailer leaks. Battlefield Hardline has an official teaser trailer out, that happens to tell us the release date too! We can all look forward to the new Battlefield 5, October 21 later this year – if there aren’t any delays, of course. Check out the video below and expect to see more during E3.

Battlefield rumors begone! A teaser video for Battlefield Hardline (yes, it’s official now) has leaked and shown off a different kind of war, the “war on crime.” Speaking of official, Steve Papoutsis VP and General Manager of Visceral Games, and Executive Producer for Battlefield Hardline hasdefinitely confirmed the latest BF5 game.

In a series of tweets, he notes that the footage we’ve seen is six months old and that we’ll indeed be seeing more about the game during E3. In fact, we may even see more teases before the June 9 conference. Though that’s not going to stop the slew of unofficial leaks – like the most recent ones of two multiplayer modes, Blood Money and Heist, on a map called High Tension.

hardline 4 E3 2014: All the latest from gamings biggest show

A game of cops and robbers, Battlefield-style

Battlefield 5 just got another whole heaping pile of rumors thrown out on the interwebs. It’s been known that the next iteration will depart from its usual militaristic setting for one where you play as the police. Meaning the nameSlashgear has thrown out, “Battlefield S.W.A.T.,” seems to make sense. And just like that, there are now even fresher rumor-y bits about the next BF5 game. VG247 reported that Battlefield Hardline may be the title. A recent Battlelog seemingly also provided various info on the possible playable classes (Enforcer, Mechanic, Operator, and Professional), game modes and more.

Mass Effect 4 has also been heavily teased by BioWare for awhile now and it seems about right to show us something at E3 – perhaps during EA’s press conference? Speaking of BioWare, it’s highly probable Dragon Age: Inquisition will be touted.

dragon 5 E3 2014: All the latest from gamings biggest show

We’re ready for those dragons

We’d like to see some Star Wars Battlefront and maybe (just maybe) Battlefield 5 thrown in as well. The Sims 4, which is coming out soon, is most definitely on the roster as well. At least one or even two of these games will see the light of the E3 stage – Geoff Keighley of Spike TVtweeted that six games will be revealed during the EA World Premiere conference.

E3 2014: Nintendo, Valve, and more games

Nintendo needs something. Anything.

Grainy pictures from the Expo have surfaced from Nintendo Enthusiastpossibly revealing the mystery 3DS game people have been speculating about: Mario Maker. From what we can see, there’s definitely a stylus in the image that appears to be designing a Mario level – which happens to coincide with the name suggesting players will be able to create their own Mario worlds. Similar to Microsoft’s Project Spark and Sony’s Little Big Planet.

mario maker 16 E3 2014: All the latest from gamings biggest show

Is this real life?

Looks like Nintendo president Satoru Iwata won’t be attending E3 this year due to medical issues. Nintendo issued the following statement:

“He’s been instructed by his physician not to travel overseas in the immediate future, and so he will not be making the trip to Los Angeles.

“It is business as usual for Mr. Iwata, and he continues his normal duties as president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. while he remains in Japan. As always, he will be actively involved in all of Nintendo’s activities at the show.”

It’s not a huge deal since the company will be holding another Nintendo Direct event on Tuesday morning before the convention floor opens.

Hopefully whatever Nintendo has planned will put it on the map again. Perhaps a few game announcements are in the works? Like, say, a Legend of Zelda for the Wii U? Or even some new hardware?

It’s actually already been confirmed by Nintendo that we actually won’t see hardware, but knowing the company’s insane privacy measures, we can still cross our fingers and wish. There’s also two new Pokémon games hitting Nintendo’s handhelds and, if our predictions are correct, a possible price drop in the Wii U’s future.

Valve probably (not?) taking a breather

Make that a long breather. Turns out Valve is pushing back the release date of those Steam Machines to 2015, noting a vague “release window” is to be expected in order to keep improving the Steam Controllers. On the bright side (maybe?), it’s a little unclear whether the delay affects only Steam Machines being made by Valve or those being sold by the 14 partner companies as well.

Recent news also suggests the Valve team has been quietly working on Half-Life 3. Yes. You read that correctly. Rumors of HL3 have been around for ages but maybe (probably not) something will come out during E3? If not, we’re hoping to see more on Left 4 Dead 3 at least.

There was plenty shared on the hardware front during CES, Steam’s Dev Days and GDC but aside from getting our paws on both iterations of the Steam Controllers, we still have yet to play around with a Steam Machine.

So far we’ve gone hands on with the Alienware Steam Machine, and though it’s a slick device, we’re hoping to really see it in action during the Expo.

With the Machines unleashing from the various third-party vendors “later this year” and a likely fall release for the redesigned Steam Controller, we’re hoping to hear more about the new features – like Steam Music.

Asus also just announced not one, but two whole Steam Machines during Computex 2014. Asus isn’t going to release them until 2015, but like the Alienware Machine during CES, the Asus boxes may show up at E3 for some demo time.

We know Valve has its own virtual reality headset thanks to Steam’s Dev Days conference – but we also know the company plans on helping out Oculus. That hasn’t stopped the VR device from popping up though.

Valve’s headset showed up in Boston during a VR meetup where devs were given the chance to go hands on with it. Since it seems to be making the rounds, might we see it during E3 too?

More games, NOW

A few titles have already been mentioned but let’s get right down to what games we want to see happen at E3 this year, and what games we know will be on the Expo floor.

GTA V for the PC is due pretty soon here and it won’t be a surprise if Rockstar decides to finally out it at the show.
uncharted 17 E3 2014: All the latest from gamings biggest show

Where you at, Drake?

Uncharted 4 (or whatever it’s called) has to show up with more footage during Sony’s conference – at least that’s the rumor flying around right now. Let’s just cross our fingers that the Naughty Dog exodus really won’t affect the game development.

The Order 1886 was teased during the last Expo and then throughout the year as a potential blockbuster game. Despite delaying its Christmas 2014 launch to early 2015, we’re still expecting the PS4 conference to show us even more of the game in June to keep us content.

We’ll also definitely see Batman: Arkham Knight on the floor too, even though its joined the list of delayed games. However, with the announcement of Mortal Kombat X, there should still be plenty for Warner Brothers to show off – especially with new characters on the fight roster.

Bethesda has also been a busy little bee. Could we see the announcement and teaser for Fallout 4? Who knows, but The Evil Within sure looks promising and will probably be on the show floor in some capacity.

evil within 18 E3 2014: All the latest from gamings biggest show

Gross.

Well it looks like Fallout 4 is out of the picture. Bethesda and BattleCry Studios announced a collaboration that spawned the upcoming free-to-play game BattleCry. However, it will be a PC exclusive and doesn’t seem to match up with the following previously reported rumor below …

Bethesda has fervently stated that there will be no announcement for a new title, but siteVideogamer took a screenshot of an Amazon UK placer page which suggests Bethesda might just unveil something after all. Whatever the Skyrim publisher has in mind, it seems it will be out on the PS3, PS4, PC,Wii, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

Microsoft’s Project Spark has seemingly failed to capture the attention of gamers since its announcement at last year’s E3, but the beta sounds like its been successful so far. We expect to see and hear more about the company’s answer to a Little Big Planet-esque game. Activision’s latest Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare should also give the Xbox One more oomph

Regardless of what gets announced, we just really want more games. There’s nothing wrong with wanting more games, right? In the meantime, keep up with us as we countdown the days to the Expo and fill up the page with even more news and bits of rumors to keep your gaming appetites satiated.

Keyboard Problems with Surface

While the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets are great little devices, like any other computer, they will occasionally have issues. A common problem that seems to come up is difficulty with the touch or type keyboards from Microsoft.

keyboard problems with surface How to fix the Keyboard Problems with Surface Tablets

The Surface tablets have the bug. The onscreen keyboard does not display, if you remove the type cover before wakes it up. Other issue is that the soft keyboard does not automatically appear in desktop mode.
So, in this post, I’m going to go over how to (hopefully) avoid touch and type keyboard problems with Surface tablets and then fix them if they happen to you.

I’m not going to cover issues with Bluetooth or USB keyboards specifically but a lot of these techniques could help you troubleshoot problems with them as well.

This post continues to be one of our most popular posts; clearly folks are still having problems with keyboards.

In this post, find the following on the subject of Keyboard Problems with Surface:

  • Avoiding Keyboard Problems
  • Fixing Keyboard Problems
  1. The Basics: Detach and reattach, restart, two-button shut down
  2. Look for updates
  3. Check Ease of Access Functions
  4. Clean the Keyboard Connections:
  • Testing your keyboard
  • Reset your Surface
  • Microsoft’s suggestions (NEW)
  • Contact Microsoft for Service

Let’s get started…

1. Avoiding Keyboard Problems with Surface Tablets

For the most part, there are two things you can do to avoid keyboard issues with your Surface.

  • Check for Issues Before Updates/Upgrades

Keep in mind, there will ALWAYS be someone who had problems. The question you need to ask yourself is; “are a lot of people having problems after the upgrade?” If there are, look to see if there’s a response from Microsoft or a posted fix before going ahead with the upgrade. Otherwise, you might want to put it off for a while to see if a fix or another update is issued.

  • Be Careful with Your Keyboard Cover: This is not to say that you have to treat your touch or type cover with kid gloves. It is designed to be quite durable but, that doesn’t mean that you can be constantly bending it or stepping on it or running over it with your car.

2. Fixing Keyboard Problems with Surface Tablets

So, you took my advice and checked before applying upgrades and you’ve been gentle on your keyboard but your touch or type keyboard isn’t working anymore. Or your keyboard started acting up out of the blue and there were no updates applied.

Now what?

I’ll go over the steps, in order, that you take to try to resolve keyboard problems with Surface tablets and the touch/type covers. I’ve had a good success rate with them and so far, have not had an instance where I haven’t been able to get the keyboard working again. Though I must admit, sometimes they come back.

A. The Basics of Fixing Keyboard Problems:

Detach and Reattach your Keyboard:

Simple and surprisingly effective. Sometimes, all you need to do is detach and reattach your keyboard cover. Make sure you leave it detached for at least, 10 seconds and I always do something to cause the on-screen keyboard to appear (like bring up IE and do a Google search) just to make sure the Surface recognizes that the keyboard is no longer attached.

Restart your Surface:

I know it’s almost cliche to say it but, Windows 8 is like every other version of Windows since 3.1. It just needs kicked in the head sometimes to work properly. So, the first thing you should try is to restart your Surface.

To do so, follow these instructions:

Make sure your keyboard cover is connected properly.
Swipe in from the right side of the screen to bring up the charms menu.
Tap on Settings.
Tap on Power.
Select Shut Down.
Wait 60 seconds and press the power button at the top of your Surface to turn it back on.

Two Button Shutdown: if you have a Surface Pro/Pro 2 you can try a two-button shutdown. This is sometimes called a hard shutdown as it, essentially, pulls the plug on the Surface hardware.

DO NOT EVER DO THIS WITH A SURFACE RT OR SURFACE 2

Shutdown your Surface Pro/Pro 2 as above
Press and hold the Volume Up and Power buttons for, at least, 15 seconds.
The screen may flash the Surface logo or other things but keep the buttons held for the 15 seconds.
When you release them, your Surface Pro/Pro 2 should be powered off. Wait at least 10 seconds and then turn it on normally.

Hopefully, this fix will do the trick. If not, let’s try the next thing.

B. Look for Updates:

This might sound ironic considering the advice in the first section but assuming the problems didn’t start because of an update, one of the first things you should do is to check for updates from Microsoft. It is possible that there is a known problem and they have provided a fix.

Note: Microsoft says to always have your keyboard plugged in when running an update, otherwise it will not apply the keyboard updates.

To do so, follow these steps:

Bring up the Search charm and look for “Updates”.

keyboard problems with surface3 How to fix the Keyboard Problems with Surface Tablets

Choose Check for Updates from the options shown.

keyboard problems with surface4 How to fix the Keyboard Problems with Surface Tablets

Tap the Check Now button.

If there are any updates, go ahead and install them.

After the updates install, you might want to do a restart (the normal kind, not the hard shutdown). If that fixes your problem then great! If not, let’s try the next thing.

C. Ease of Access Functions:

Ironically, features designed to help people with disabilities may actually be causing or contributing to your keyboard problems with Surface tablets. It’s possible that a couple features dealing with the keyboard were accidentally turned on and that could be what’s causing your problems.

To check if that’s the case do the following:

Bring up the Search charm and look for “Ease of Access”.

keyboard problems with surface1 How to fix the Keyboard Problems with Surface Tablets

Choose Ease of Access Keyboard Settings.
Under the Useful Keys section (at the bottom) make sure Sticky Keys and Filter Keys are both set to Off.

keyboard problems with surface2 How to fix the Keyboard Problems with Surface Tablets

D. Clean the Keyboard Connections:

This one is often overlooked. Your keyboard connects to your Surface via a series of six brass colored contacts at the bottom of the tablet.

keyboard problems with surface4 How to fix the Keyboard Problems with Surface Tablets

They will occasionally become tarnished or maybe even have dirt/food/dried coffee/etc. on them. This is normal as they often spend time shoved in a computer bag (when’s the last time you cleaned it out?) or on your desk where you might be eating or drinking.

You can clean them (both on the Surface and on the keyboard) by taking a pencil eraser and gentlyscrubbing the contacts until they are shiny again. Alternatively, you can use some rubbing alcohol and Q-tips to clean the contacts. Better yet, do both if you can.

IMPORTANT: Make sure your Surface is powered completely off and not plugged in when you’re cleaning your connections. Especially if you’re using the rubbing alcohol technique.

Remove your Surface from its Case:

If you have a protective sleeve or case for your Surface that still allows for the keyboard cover to be attached, remove it and see if the problem persists. It could be as simple as the case is interfering with a solid connection between the cover keyboard and the tablet.

Things to Look for:

Make sure your Surface fits snugly in the case. It could be that the Surface is simply slipping out of position preventing a good connection with the keyboard cover.
Loose connections between the keyboard and Surface because some piece of the case is in the way or being pinched.
Wear on the case that might result in flakes or loose threads getting into the keyboard connector on your Surface.
Check your case for Magnets. Some cases have a magnetic clasp or plate to hold the cover shut. These magnets can interfere with the magnets used to make the keyboard connection between the Surface and it’s type or touch cover.

3. Test Your Keyboard:

Your keyboard could be the problem. Don’t forget, it’s flexible and not quite as rugged as your Surface. So it’s not out of the question that your keyboard simply broke.

The easiest way to test that it’s not your keyboard is to simply try it on another Surface. If you have a friend that has a Surface, see if he/she will allow you to swap keyboards for a while. If the problem moves with the keyboard, it’s probably the keyboard that’s at fault.

If you don’t have a friend to swap with, try disconnecting your keyboard and opening notepad – start typing something. Then reconnect your keyboard and see if the onscreen keyboard goes away. If it does, then your external keyboard is at least being recognized. If it doesn’t, well then there is a problem.

You can also, always take your keyboard into your local Microsoft Store (if you have one nearby) or Best Buy to try it out on one of their demo machines. It’s probably a good idea to let the sales people know what you’re doing so they don’t think you’re up to no good.

If your keyboard is bad, you’ll probably have to bite the bullet and buy a new keyboard as they’re not really designed to be serviced. Although complaining to Microsoft might get you a replacement.

4. Reset your Surface:

If you’re here, I have some bad news. We’re to the point that there’s a good possibility that something is corrupt in Windows. This occasionally happens especially if you’re adding and removing a lot of software.

The way to deal with this is to do a reset or restore of your Surface tablet. I’ve provided links below to Microsoft’s pages on how to do a reset or restore for Both Surface RT/2 and Surface Pro/Pro2 tablets.

Refresh or Reset Surface RT/2
Refresh or Reset Surface Pro/Pro2

I recommend you try a refresh first and a reset only if a refresh fails. Don’t forget to backup your data to Skydrive or a USB drive before doing the reset as the drive will be wiped as part of the procedure.

5. Microsoft’s suggestions:

We’ve had reports from our readers of Microsoft suggesting weird stuff. For example, one person reported that Microsoft support had her detach and reattach her keyboard 10 time in a row. Reportedly that fixed her problem.

Microsoft support also suggest to do the following:

Go to your Desktop
Open Device Manager (in Control Panel)
Click Keyboards
Press and hold on your keyboard item
Select Update Driver Software.. (Surface Touch Cover Filter Device) from the menu
Select Browse my computer for driver software
Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
If there are two versions presented, pick version 141 for Pro or 101 for RT to install. If there is only one version shown, pick and install it

6. Contact Microsoft for Service:

If you’ve made it to here then it’s possible that your Surface has suffered some sort of hardware fault. If that’s the case, hopefully you’re still in the warranty period or you’ve bought an extended service plan.

Hopefully, this post helps you avoid and fix touch or type keyboard problems with your Surface tablet. As usual, if you have questions, let me know and I’ll answer them as I can.

The LG G3 was officially announced only recently but reports carrying details about the LG G3 Mini have already started coming out. It is common practice for big brands, even some small brands, to make mini variants of their popular flagship phones. Some manufacturers offer high end specs and the same design in a more compact shell while some try to make a smaller device without caring about the specs too much.

lg g3 global launch back LG G3 Mini details surface ahead of official launch

The HTC One mini 2 which is the smaller variant of the HTC One M8 adopts its design from the bigger One M8 while the specs are unfairly trimmed to fit the smaller frame. Unlike HTC, Sony made the Xperia Z compact and claimed it was the most powerful compact smartphone, with specs just as powerful as those of its older sibling Xperia Z1.

In keeping with this, we expect LG not just to make a smaller G3 but also make a powerful smartphone. The device must match the pace of the bigger G3 which is a 5.5-inch device with Quad HD resolution. Right now the leaked specs disappoint as they suggest the LG G3 Mini would come with a 4.5-inch display, a 1.2GHz Quad-Core processor and a 2,100mAH battery. It is also rumored that the device will bear only a 5 MP rear camera. We are having a hard time trusting these rumours and we suggest you don’t take them too seriously either as we all know the potential LG has now in making smartphones. Stay tuned for an official update!

Are you excited about iOS 8?

June 2nd, 2014 | Posted by mobmshare in News - (0 Comments)

In less than 24 hours from now, Apple will unveil iOS 8, the next generation mobileoperating system for our iOS devices at one of the most anticipated Apple event.

ios 8 banner wwdc hanging Are you excited about iOS 8?

Since iOS 7 featured an all-new design, we don’t expect Apple to make radical changes in iOS 8. We expect it to be an evolutionary upgrade from iOS 7.

So far leaks also seem to suggest that iOS 8 won’t be revolutionary or controversial as the iOS 7 update. While we have a fairly long wish list for iOS 8, here are some of the features that it is likely to include:

  • All-new Healthbook app that will monitor your most important health statistics like steps taken, calories burned, weight lost and track vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate and other blood-related parameters like glucose levels. All this data would likely be obtained by the sensors on the iWatch.
  • Split-Screen Multitasking feature for the iPad that will allow users to run twoapps simultaneously
  • Improved Maps with public transit directions, improved point-of-interest data, augmented reality and indoor maps
  • All-new Preview and Textedit apps to make iCloud more useful
  • Improved Notification Center is likely to include more information from your online accounts powered by Apple’s acquisition of Cue.
  • All-new Smart Home platform
  • Song identification feature powered by Shazam
  • Inter-app communication abilities to better facilitate sharing of information between apps.
  • Support for Voice over LTE (VoLTE) for improved call quality, and allow users to surf the web over LTE while on a call.
  • High definition playback support
  • Standalone iTunes Radio app

So the question is, are you excited about iOS 8? Based on the response I have seen for the iOS 8 related articles, there isn’t as much excitement as there was the same time last year for iOS 7. It looks like people were disappointed with iOS 7, and don’t have high hopes, or they know that it is not going to be big update. What about you?

Spotify is one of the most popular cross-platform streaming music services, with over 40 million active users worldwide. While I am out of luck using the service as a Canadian, our neighbors to the south and elsewhere can benefit from a jailbreak tweak called DefaultSpot. The simple iOS extension sets Spotify as the default music player on iPhone, and also integrates with the Control Center playback controls…

I decided to give DefaultSpot a test by signing in to my Apple ID for the United States, downloading Spotify and creating an account. After toggling on the tweak through the Settings app and respringing my iPhone, it worked just as advertised. When the stock Musicapp is not in use, tapping on the play button or other music controls in Control Center or other areas causes the Spotify app to open for listening to streaming music.

controls for spotify How to set Spotify as the default music player on iPhone

DefaultSpot is a free download on Cydia in the default BigBoss repository, and it must be enabled through the Settings menu after installation. The tweak, developed by Ron Thakrar, is compatible with iOS 7 and 64-bit devices. It can be combined with the Controls for Spotify package to enable auto-resume on launching Spotify. That feature must be toggled through the Settings menu as well.

Our own Jeff Benjamin previously reviewed Controls for Spotify, which is also developed by Thakrar. The tweak enhances your Spotify controls with Activator actions for shuffle, repeat, thumbs up, thumbs down, star, star and thumbs up, and copy playing URL. It allows you to set two-finger gestures from the bottom of the screen, left, right, top or elsewhere to gain better control over the streaming music app.

“It’s a heavyweight new contender in the drama category, just as Netflix now is as a content provider.” The Hollywood Reporter

“Deeply cynical about human beings as well as politics and almost gleeful in its portrayal of limitless ambition, House of Cards is a wonderfully sour take on power and corruption.” Denver Post

Yesterday, LG has announced that they will be adding three more new tablets to their tablet line up. In addition to the already available LG G Pad 8.3 which has received mostly positive reviews, as people seemed to have mixed feelings on 8-inch tablets being the perfect size with some loving it and some hating it. LG was aware of this fact and realized that tablet buyers like to have choice in deciding which size tablets are right for them. This led them to develop and prepare three more tablet sizes, so that there can be a size for every taste.

lg gPad 8.0 7.0 10.1 LG Announces Three New G Pad Tablets In 7, 8, and 10 Inch Sizes

Starting on May 13th at the MedPI 2014 in Monaco, LG will be set to unveil the LG G Pad 7.0, the LG G Pad 8.0, and the LG G Pad 10.1, bringing their G Pad line to four devices total which should do nicely for those who were interested in the G Pad but may have wanted either a smaller or larger size screen. With the G Pad 8.0 there isn’t much size difference from the 8.3, but a newly refreshed tablet with a slightly smaller size will surely appeal to some. With a wider selection, LG should be setting themselves up to better compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung, who currently dominate the marketshare. President and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Dr. Jong-seok Park, had stated that “Customers tell us that they want a wider range of devices that offer sizable screens without compromising portability”. In today’s market where people are increasingly more mobile on a day to day basis and with smartphone screens coming out in larger and larger sizes, it makes sense that the tablets screens should have just as much variety.

gpad LG Announces Three New G Pad Tablets In 7, 8, and 10 Inch Sizes

All three new tablets will have some of LG’s proprietary UX features like Knock Code and QPair 2.0. However each tablet will likely cater to a specific group. The G Pad 7.0 was designed with one handed use in mind, so those who constantly use their device and like to hold it in one hand while keeping the other free will be able to do so, while those wanting to be somewhere in the middle would go for something like the G Pad 8.3 or the brand new G Pad 8.0. For people who want the absolute most immersive experience though might want to look into LG’s newest and largest offering which will end up being the LG G Pad 10.1. As of right now LG hasn’t released any official information on specs or hardware features of these newly announced devices, but they did specify that more details would be coming in the weeks ahead. We’ll surely end up learning more MedPI 2014, but we wouldn’t be surprised if LG kept some stuff a secret to keep consumers on the hook.

With Surface 2 and Windows 8.1 RT, Microsoft has certainly addressed some of usability issues that plagued the original Surface RT models.

Based around an Nvidia Tegra 4 chip, the second generation Surface hardware is faster and has a superior battery life. It also boasts an improved 1080p HD display, redesigned kickstand and a competitive price tag that undercuts Apple’s iPad. You can see how Surface and Surface 2 compare in Surface vs Surface 2.

s2 charcoal What would you like to see in a Surface 3 device?

Whatever Microsoft is doing it is working – albeit slowly. Numerous reports say overall Surface usage went upover the festive period in late 2013.

So what will Microsoft do next? What might a Surface 3 device look like in 2014?

Surface 3: The Windows RT dilemma

There’s arguably nothing wrong with the Surface hardware. We like it. The Surface 2 looks good and feels good. It’s smartly, stylishly designed and the two-stage kickstand makes it easier to position the device comfortably for work. Although not including one of the iconic click-in keyboards as standard is frankly criminal.

A Surface 3 tablet should look fundamentally the same, albeit with a customary millimetre shaved off its magnesium alloy waistline and a few grams shifted from its chassis. Hardware isn’t the problem. The problem is Windows RT.

We really like Surface 2 – can Surface 3 improve on the formula?

With Dell recently dumping the ‘Lite’ Windows 8 OS citing poor sales of its XPS 10, any new Surface hardware could be held back by the limitations of the RT software, which restricts users to using ‘Metro’ apps. It’s Windows, but not as consumers know or expect it.

Admittedly, Windows 8.1 has improved the usability of the OS, and Office RT is now included. Any future Windows 8.2 update should do even more to iron out the inconsistencies. The Windows Store also boasts more apps than a year ago – over 100,000 at the last count. By the time a Surface 3 line-up rolls out, there should be double that number.

But a stripped down version of an OS that many people already dislike isn’t going to help Microsoft claw back the $900 million it has lost on Surface RT so far. At the moment, there’s no clear benefit to running RT over the full version of Windows and so no clear benefit for investing in a non-Pro Surface tablet, Surface 3 or otherwise.

If Microsoft wants to be bold, Surface 3 needs to quietly dump Windows RT and eliminate customer confusion. The popularity of the Surface Pro model and the powerful potential of the new Surface Pro 2 point the way forward for a more successful, populist Surface 3.Surface 3: Mini or Maxi?

If Microsoft does stubbornly stick with Windows RT (and it will), then perhaps a Surface 3 line-up will offer more hardware options.

Before the Surface 2 launch, there were strong rumours of a ‘Surface Mini’ with a 7.5-inch or 8-inch display, especially as Windows 8.1 now provides improved support for smaller tablets. This would range it against more compact slates such as the iPad mini and the Google Nexus 7, not to mention the Acer Iconia W3 and Toshiba Encore.

At the other end of the scale, we can imagine a bigger touchscreen model. There are rumours of Apple experimenting with 12- and 13-inch iPad displays and where Apple leads, the other manufacturers are sure to follow. With this in mind, perhaps fingerprint sensors might become standard issue too, after their iPhone 5S debut.

Or we might see an even larger device that takes its cue from Sony’s VAIO Tap 20. Such a ‘Surface Maxi’ would move Surface into all-in-one desktop PC territory, although it would require ditching Windows RT in favour of the full-fat Windows 8 OS. A Surface Pro 2 XS or XL would be ideal.

The most obvious change for Surface 3 would be to shrink the device down and ship an iPad mini-sized model

Surface 3: Is there a smartwatch in the works?

With wearable tech all the rage, it must surely have occurred to Microsoft that the touchy-feely Surface brand could be extended into smartwatch territory. Like the Galaxy Gear, a ‘Surface Watch’ with a small screen and obligatory built-in fitness tech could be launched as a companion device for its Windows-powered tablets and smartphones.

Then there’s Surface gaming to consider. Gamers have long hankered after a portable Xbox and devices such as the Razer Edge give us glimpses of how this idea could work. Yet Microsoft barely touched on the gaming potential of its Surface 2 hardware at launch, choosing instead to focus on productivity and business.

But with reports of Microsoft cloud-streaming Halo 4 to a low-end Windows PC and a Windows Phone, a future Surface 3 device could easily evolve into a portable games console.Surface 3: The obvious answer

Surface 2 is affordable but limited by its Windows RT software; while the Surface Pro 2 has all the versatility of a Windows PC but, in tablet terms, costs way too much. Surely any Surface 3 machine needs to hit the sweet spot between the two – full Windows functionality at an affordable and competitive price point?
